2. Teach Chilren To Save
Teach Children to Save South Africa™ (TCTS SA™) is a generic financial literacy programme of The Banking Association South Africa. The overall goal of the initiative is to teach children to save. The custodians of TCTS SA™ are The Banking Association South Africa and the South African Savings Institute (SASI). The concept of Teach Children to Save was founded by the Washington DC based American Bankers Association Education Foundation (ABAEF) in 1997. This concept was adopted, localised, customised and successfully piloted in July 2008 by The Banking Association South Africa and the South African Savings Institute (SASI) in conjunction with ABAEF, Operation HOPE and Citi. The foundation has run the programme successfully at Bisho Primary School.
3. Junior Apprentice South Africa
The programme is a product of Inspire Foundation Group Africa, and it is funded and supported by Barclays Africa Group/Absa. Junior Apprentice SA is aimed at grade 7—12 learners, particularly those from disadvantaged schools. The main participants are the funders, teachers, young professionals from various corporates and supporting local businesses. Through Junior Apprentice SA, the foundation aims to:
Endorse entrepreneurship as a desirable career choice
Expose learners to challenges faced by start-ups
Empower learners with basic concepts of starting up your own business
Encourage direct participation of local business personalities in education
Through this programme learners are exposed to the concept of entrepreneurship at a young age (13 – 18 year olds). Some of the skills gained in this programme include:
Business plan drafting
Planning and organization
Market research
Financial management
Team work
Public speaking
Sales
The emphasis on skills above is aimed at motivating learners to start and successfully run their own businesses in future. Above all, the incorporation of this programme into the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) school curriculum assists in putting into practice theoretical concepts learnt in the classroom.
